26 letters, their names and spelling your name

Chapter 1. Hello, English! 15 minutes 4 questions

The English alphabet has 26 letters. Most of them look like the letters of the Uzbek Latin script, but their names are said differently. You need the letter names to spell your name, address or email.

Letter Name Letter Name
A a /eɪ/ N n /en/

C c /siː/ P p /piː/
D d /diː/ Q q /kjuː/
E e /iː/ R r /ɑː(r)/
F f /ef/ S s /es/

Vowels and consonants

There are five vowel letters: A, E, I, O, U. The other 21 are consonants. This matters later — for example, choosing a or an depends on whether a word starts with a vowel sound.

⚠️ Letters people mix up

  • E is said /iː/, while I is /aɪ/.
  • G is /dʒiː/, J is /dʒeɪ/.
  • W is "double U".
  • Y is /waɪ/.

Spelling your name

— What's your name?
— Aziz.
— How do you spell it?
— A - Z - I - Z.

When the same letter appears twice in a row, people often say double: Anna → A - double N - A.
