What is artificial intelligence?
AI is all around us: face unlock, translation, recommendations
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a computer doing tasks that usually need human intelligence: recognising pictures, understanding speech, translating, giving advice.
You meet AI every day:
- 📱 your phone recognises your face to unlock;
- ▶️ YouTube recommends videos you might like;
- 🌐 a translator turns text into another language;
- 🗺️ a map predicts traffic jams.
Ordinary program vs AI
In an ordinary program the programmer writes the rule:
temperature = 32
if temperature > 30:
print("It's hot today — drink water!")
# Output: It's hot today — drink water!
With AI, the computer finds the rule itself from thousands of examples. You can't describe a cat with "if its ears are pointy…" — there are too many cases. So AI is shown thousands of cat and dog pictures and learns the difference by itself.
Today's AI is "narrow" AI
All current AI systems are good at one kind of task: one draws, one translates, one plays chess. A "general" AI that understands everything like a person does not exist yet.
💡 AI makes mistakes too. Always check its answers yourself — especially for important things.
